Treasurer Jim Chalmers announces the $20,000 instant asset tax write-off scheme becomes permanent for small businesses and self-employed tradies in Tuesday’s Federal Budget. Originally set to expire on June 30, the program—expanded from $1,000 in 2023—allows eligible businesses to deduct the full cost of assets up to $20,000 immediately from taxable income in the purchase year.
Key Benefits for Businesses
This per-asset threshold enables multiple claims annually, replacing multi-year depreciation with instant cash flow relief. Trades, hospitality, and retail sectors stand to gain most, claiming tools, computers, payment systems, and other work essentials without delay.
Productivity Reforms Drive Economic Growth
The Budget emphasizes productivity enhancements to expand the economy and raise living standards. Chalmers states, “A big productivity push is one of the most important parts of Tuesday’s budget to grow our economy and lift living standards.”
He adds, “We are acting on a broader range of fronts to make our economy more productive and dynamic. A lot of work, a lot of consultation has gone into this very substantial productivity package. It’s all about getting costs down, cutting red tape, making it easier and faster to build, and making Australia a more attractive place to invest.”
Major Red Tape Reductions
Reforms target eight areas, including:
- A $780 million annual cut in financial sector regulatory costs via 14 law changes.
- Harmonized state systems for payroll tax and retail tenancy to eliminate jurisdictional differences.
- $650.5 million for a ‘tell us once’ national digital ID system, streamlining government interactions.
- $5.7 million to accelerate exporter and importer market access by slashing admin costs.
- Waived fees for Mandatory Australian Standards in construction, occupational health and safety, and product safety—saving small businesses up to $1,600 yearly.
Support for Workers and Students
Migrant skilled workers gain faster qualification recognition, reducing workforce entry time by up to six months. University students with TAFE credentials benefit from a National Credit Recognition Framework, enabling quicker degree completion and less duplication.
