Clay Aiken returned to the American Idol stage on Monday, May 11, during the show’s three-hour season 24 finale. His return came 23 years after his memorable run as a contestant on season 2 of American Idol in 2003.
Clay Aiken’s appearance also marked another major milestone for the singer, as he debuted his first new single in 18 years, titled “Rewind.”
Although Clay Aiken did not win “American Idol,” he became one of the show’s most successful contestants after finishing as the runner-up on season 2 of the show. He lost to Ruben Studdard by a narrow margin of approximately 134,000 votes during season 2.
Reflecting on his return to the show and the experience of performing new music again, Aiken admitted the moment felt emotional and surreal. Speaking to ABC 11, he said:
“It’s kind of cool to have it back…It’s a very surreal experience.”
The singer also revealed that the performance carried special meaning because it was the first time his teenage son, Parker, had experienced him releasing new music. Discussing his son’s reaction to the moment, Aiken said:
“He’s not been alive when I had new music out. So this is a whole new thing for him, too.”
More about Clay Aiken and his return to the American Idol stage for the Season 24 finale

Clay Aiken first announced his return to the American Idol stage through Instagram on May 6, days before appearing during the show’s season 24 finale.
The singer revealed that he would perform his first new single in 18 years, titled “Rewind,” during the live finale event on May 11. Sharing the announcement with fans on Instagram, Aiken wrote:
“It’s official! I’m headed back to the Idol stage on May 11 to perform my first new single in eighteen years! (Which, by the way, is releasing the same day…It’s going to be a real ‘Rewind’ moment. While you’re waiting for next Monday…head up to the attic and dig out those old posters and t-shirts! I know you still got em!”
In addition to debuting new music, Aiken also surprised viewers with a noticeably brighter and more fashion-forward appearance compared to the gray and black outfits he frequently wore during his original “American Idol” run more than two decades ago.
For his finale performance, the singer wore a bright blue polka-dot shirt paired with high-waisted gray flare pants and also sported painted nails, showcasing a more modern and colorful personal style.
North Carolina continued to play a central role in Aiken’s return to the show.
During the finale, he performed a duet of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” alongside fellow North Carolina native and finalist Braden Rumfelt, the same song Aiken famously performed during his own season 2 journey in 2003.
A month before the finale aired, Aiken also shared a video message inviting Rumfelt to join him onstage for the special duet performance.
Congratulating the finalist on his success during the season, Aiken said:
“I just got off a plane in a place we both love, North Carolina, and I wanted to take a second to congratulate you on an incredible run this year and let you know we’re all cheering for you here in North Carolina.”(as per Hello magazine)
The singer further revealed that he wanted Rumfelt to join him for the finale performance and expressed pride in representing their home state on the show together.
“And as the very first North Carolinian to be on the American Idol stage, it would be my honor if you would be willing to sing with me on this year’s finale. I will see you in May, and we’ll be rooting for you to be the fourth North Carolina winner of American Idol. See you then,” he added.
As per ABC11, Clay Aiken is also scheduled to perform in Las Vegas in July, 2026
