Scam at Southgate Mall Leaves Seller Out $4,500

An Edmonton resident named Rick lost $4,500 to a clever scam during a Facebook Marketplace transaction for a high-end Dell laptop. He listed the device for that amount and agreed to meet the buyer at Southgate Mall, a busy public location.

Rick received an envelope stuffed with cash from the buyer and counted it twice to verify. However, while his attention shifted momentarily, the buyer swapped the real money with a decoy envelope holding just two counterfeit $50 bills and some news clippings.

Victim’s Precautions and Aftermath

“I followed all the standard safety steps—meeting in public, insisting on cash, and reviewing the buyer’s profile,” Rick explained. Despite these measures, he felt deep shame and embarrassment afterward.

He immediately approached mall security, but staff indicated limited options for intervention. Rick then filed a report with local police to document the incident.

Call for Vigilance and Safer Alternatives

Rick urges others facing similar scams to report them promptly. “Contact the police and file a report, even if it seems futile,” he said. “Enough reports could lead to these criminals’ capture.”

For future sales, Rick plans to use a police station. “People’s actions are unpredictable these days,” he noted.

Police-Safe Exchange Zones Available

Edmonton police offer Buy and Sell Exchange Zones at four stations across the city. These monitored areas allow safe transactions under surveillance to prevent such frauds.
