To the editor: Thirty-nine years in the past, President Reagan said in a information convention, “The 9 most terrifying phrases within the English language are ‘I’m from the federal government and I’m right here to assist.’” Reagan was held within the highest regard by Republicans for many years.

Final month, Republican Homeland Safety Secretary Kristi Noem mentioned, “We’re staying [in Los Angeles] to liberate this metropolis from the socialists and the burdensome management that this governor and that this mayor have positioned on this nation, and what they’ve tried to insert into this metropolis” (“After six months beneath Trump, California and L.A. are battlegrounds. Who advantages?,” July 20).

It’s wonderful how the occasion of Lincoln would pivot to the occasion of being hypocritical. In relation to state’s rights, President Trump has endorsed them after they work to his profit. In the meantime, we now have native elections for mayors and governors. If we don’t like what our elected officers do, we will vote them out or recall them. And those that don’t just like the outcomes can transfer to a state that’s extra to their liking. The system works when the federal authorities doesn’t intrude.

Noem, take note of Reagan. Don’t assist.
