WestJet suspends direct flights from Winnipeg to Atlanta and Nashville due to sharply reduced demand for U.S. travel. The airline reports a significant decline in transborder trips throughout 2025, with no recovery expected soon, prompting these route changes.

Route Changes and Background

Julia Kaiser, WestJet spokesperson, confirmed the suspensions in response to inquiries. The carrier introduced Winnipeg-Atlanta service in 2023 and added Nashville in 2024. Atlanta flights had already dropped from five weekly to two before full suspension. Direct Los Angeles flights ended in June 2025 after a $4.8-million provincial subsidy fund for those routes depleted without renewal.

WestJet also plans seasonal pauses on Winnipeg-Orlando flights but will modestly boost summer service to Las Vegas over last year.

Airport Views on Cross-Border Trends

U.S. tariffs exert a minimal yet consistent pressure on traffic, causing an eight percent dip in U.S.-bound travel from Winnipeg Richardson International Airport, according to Kerilee Falloon, communications director. Airlines redirect focus to high-demand routes like Costa Rica and a new direct Iceland flight launching in July.

Travelers still access multiple U.S. destinations from Winnipeg.

Economic Opportunities Amid Shifts

Direct flights bolster tourism, business links, and growth, states Ryan Kuffner, president and CEO of Winnipeg Economic Development & Tourism. Rising domestic travel among Canadians opens doors to draw more visitors to the city, and his team works with airport authorities for reliable connectivity.

Traveler Disappointment

Leanne Pearson, a decade-long Nashville resident and former Manitoban musician, laments the Nashville cuts. She travels often to see family, recalling packed flights for Winnipeg Jets-Nashville Predators NHL games or Tennessee Titans NFL matchups.

“The flights that I was on were quite full,” Pearson said. “Especially with the Jets and the Preds and the Titans games, I’m very shocked. I’m sure they have their reasons.”

Direct routes eased family visits and served musicians bound for Manitoba festivals or Nashville gigs. “Now, my heart just kind of drops a little bit, because you know it’s going to be a little bit harder, a little bit longer,” she added.
