The Justice Division has despatched subpoenas to Minnesota Gov. In a press release to NBC Information, Frey sharply criticized the Trump administration and accused the Justice Division of misusing its energy.

“When the federal authorities weaponizes its energy to attempt to intimidate native leaders for doing their jobs, each American ought to be involved. We shouldn’t must dwell in a rustic the place folks concern that federal legislation enforcement will likely be used to play politics or crack down on native voices they disagree with,” Frey added.

“In Minneapolis, we received’t be afraid. We all know the distinction between proper and unsuitable and, as Mayor, I’ll proceed doing the job I used to be elected to do: conserving our neighborhood secure and standing up for our values,” the Democratic mayor added.

In a press release, Ellison mentioned the subpoena was “for information and paperwork, not for me personally.”

“The whole lot about that is extremely irregular, particularly the truth that this comes shortly after my workplace sued the Trump Administration to problem their unlawful actions inside Minnesota,” Ellison mentioned.

“Let’s be clear about why that is taking place: Donald Trump is coming after the folks of Minnesota and I’m standing in his means,” Ellison added. “I can’t be intimidated, and I can’t cease working to guard Minnesotans from Trump’s marketing campaign of retaliation and revenge.”

The investigation comes after an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and mom of three, throughout an immigration enforcement operation. The killing sparked protests and led to clashes between demonstrators and legislation enforcement in scenes which have drawn nationwide consideration.

The federal statute invoked within the investigation into Minnesota officers has been hardly ever used and has roots within the Civil Struggle-era. However it was on an inventory of statutes in a memo from Legal professional Normal Pam Bondi final month, obtained by NBC Information, that provided a street map for federal prosecutors on the way to cost political agitators with crimes.

Federal officers are additionally investigating Good’s accomplice to find out whether or not she might have impeded a federal officer moments earlier than Good was shot and killed, two folks aware of the investigation mentioned.

Walz has mentioned beforehand: “The one individual not being investigated for the taking pictures of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.” He was referring to ICE officer Jonathan Ross, a conflict veteran who spent over a decade working for the Division of Homeland Safety.
