Meta Platforms has rolled out an “incognito” mode in WhatsApp, allowing users to conduct private conversations with its AI chatbot. This update tackles privacy issues tied to sharing sensitive information in AI chats.
Secure and Temporary AI Conversations
Incognito mode enables ephemeral chats with Meta AI, the AI assistant available on WhatsApp. Messages process in a secure environment beyond Meta’s reach, remain unsaved by default, and vanish when users end the session.
Tackling Privacy Risks in Generative AI
Large language models powering generative AI often train on massive datasets, including user chats containing personal details. Rival tools like Google’s Gemini let users turn off chat history and block data from AI training. ChatGPT provides comparable options.
Users routinely share private financial, health, personal, or work data in queries, prompting this feature’s development.
“We’re starting to ask a lot of meaningful questions about our lives with AI systems, and it doesn’t always feel like you should have to share the information behind those questions with the companies that run those AI systems,” stated Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp.
Safety Features and ge Limits
Safety measures block harmful topics. The chatbot redirects to useful information, declines unsafe requests, and halts engagement if needed, Cathcart explained. It supports only text questions and replies—no image uploads or generation. Users must confirm they are over 13, aligning with platform age rules.
