UK motorists face severe penalties, including fines up to £10,000 and 12 penalty points on their licence, for driving with illegal tyre tread depth. This common issue affects vehicles where all four tyres fall below the minimum legal standard.

Legal Tyre Tread Requirements

The Highway Code mandates that cars, light vans, and light trailers maintain a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the full circumference. Failure to comply on one tyre can result in a £2,500 fine and three penalty points. With four illegal tyres, penalties escalate to £10,000 and 12 points.

The Simple 20p Test

Motoring experts recommend a quick 20p coin test to check compliance. Insert the coin into the tyre’s tread grooves. If the outer band on the coin remains hidden, the tread meets the legal limit of 1.6 mm.

However, if the band is visible within the grooves, the tyres may be unsafe and need professional inspection. Perform this check every two weeks and before long journeys to stay compliant and safe.

Safety and Insurance Risks

Driving on tyres with insufficient tread or bald patches increases accident risks for drivers and others. In a crash, illegal tyres could invalidate insurance claims, leaving motorists responsible for all repair costs.

Accurate Measurement Tools

For precise checks, invest in a tyre tread depth gauge. Basic colour-coded versions provide instant legal status readings at a glance.
