British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizes to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that global attention must stay fixed on Ukraine’s defense against Russia, even as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran intensifies. The leaders meet in London to sign a new defense partnership targeting drone threats.

Key Meeting in London

Starmer hosts Zelensky at Downing Street during the Ukrainian leader’s European tour, following a Paris visit and ahead of Madrid. The discussions highlight concerns that Middle East tensions overshadow Ukraine’s ongoing battle with Russia, now in its fourth year.

Efforts by the United States to broker a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow stall amid the Iran war, with no new date for three-party talks. Washington eases some sanctions on Moscow to stabilize surging oil prices triggered by regional unrest.

“I think it’s really important that we are clear that the focus must remain on Ukraine,” Starmer states. “There’s obviously a conflict in Iran going on, in the Middle East, but we can’t lose focus on what’s going on in Ukraine and the need for our support,” he adds.

New Drone Defense Agreement

The UK-Ukraine pact harnesses Ukraine’s drone-defense experience from its war with Russia alongside Britain’s manufacturing strengths to produce and supply advanced drones and technologies. It allocates £500,000 ($670,000) to establish an AI Centre of Excellence within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.

The agreement aims to enhance worldwide defenses against affordable, high-tech weapons like drones. Since late last month, Iran deploys ballistic missiles against Israel but uses drones for strikes on Gulf targets.

Zelensky Highlights Anti-Drone Expertise

Speaking to UK parliament members, Zelensky reveals that 201 Ukrainian military specialists assist Middle East allies against Iranian-designed Shahed drones, deployed by Russia in Ukraine. Teams operate in the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, with more heading to Kuwait and 34 additional experts prepared for deployment.

“We do not want this terror of the Iranian regime against its neighbours to succeed,” Zelensky declares in his address, showcasing Ukraine’s hard-won skills from four years of conflict.

European partners reaffirm commitment to Ukraine. “Our resolve is unbreakable,” Starmer declares, underscoring the UK’s steadfast aid. Zelensky also meets King Charles at Buckingham Palace, later thanking the Royal Family on X for their “unwavering support and solidarity.” He plans discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
