Richard Osman, the acclaimed British TV presenter and co-creator of the quiz show Pointless, received an OBE from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. The honor recognizes his contributions to literature and broadcasting. He was accompanied by his wife, actress Ingrid Oliver, and daughter Ruby, 28, who made her first public appearance at the event.
Ruby Osman’s Academic Excellence
Ruby Osman, whom Richard shares with son Sonny, 26, from his first marriage, has built a distinguished career in geopolitics. She attended Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge, excelling in maths, French, and history with three A* grades and an A in her extended project qualification.
Ruby earned a place at Oxford University to study Chinese. She spent one year of her four-year degree at Peking University in Beijing’s Haidian district. During her time at Oxford, she founded the Silk Road Society, a student think tank examining geopolitical and economic aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Richard’s Reflections on Ruby’s China Studies
Richard once expressed concerns about Ruby studying in China, stating: “Ruby decided she wanted to study Chinese at university. However, she then decided that she actually wanted to study it in China. This, I thought, was a slightly more terrifying idea, as it meant her actually going to China.”
To ease his worries, the family visited Shanghai. Richard described the trip as “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” They immersed themselves in the city’s culture and history, enjoyed superb local cuisine, and noted how Ruby, standing 6ft tall, was treated like a “goddess” by locals.
Professional Achievements
Ruby graduated with first-class honors from Oxford, earning the Gibbs Prize for the highest achievement in Chinese with an average mark of 73. She then worked two years as a freelance translator at the Central Compilation & Translation Bureau.
For the past six years, Ruby has advanced at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, rising from geopolitical researcher to senior geopolitical advisor. In 2024, she joined the advisory board of the British Foreign Policy Group. The following year, she became a non-resident expert at the Oxford China Policy Lab.
Her expertise has appeared in outlets like the BBC, TIME, and Project Syndicate.
Family Privacy and Fatherhood
Richard maintains privacy around his family, particularly his first wife, whose identity remains undisclosed. The couple married in the late 1990s, had two children, and divorced in 2007. Richard has emphasized respecting her privacy, noting: “It’s not my story, if you know what I mean. It’s nothing grim; it’s just her privacy.”
Reflecting on fatherhood, especially after his own father’s absence, Richard shared: “When my partnership broke up, I did think, ‘Oh God, this is going to be awful.’ I’ve seen my kids nonstop… They know I love them and I tell them nonstop.” He remains deeply involved in their lives post-divorce.
Richard briefly dated jazz singer Sumudu Jayatilaka in 2018 before marrying Ingrid Oliver in December 2022.
