A powerful explosion at a nightclub in Peru’s Trujillo province has injured 33 people, including several teenagers, authorities confirm. The blast occurred in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, March 7, at the Dali nightclub in the northern La Libertad region.
Serious Injuries and Medical Response
Five victims remain in serious condition following the incident. Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, stated that some individuals suffered limb amputations and shrapnel wounds. Many underwent immediate surgery to address their injuries.
Among the wounded are three minors: a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds, Florián noted.
Eyewitness Describes Chaos
Fiorella Mantilla, present at the nightclub during the explosion, recounted glass shards embedded in her legs. She described the moment: “It sounded as if the sound system had suddenly been turned off.”
Context of Rising Violence
The attack comes amid escalating violence in Peru, particularly in the La Libertad region plagued by extortion and illegal mining. Official figures show 286 explosions in the region during 2025, with 136 occurring in Trujillo alone.
Recent incidents include a January 2025 detonation at a prosecutor’s office in Trujillo, as well as August and September blasts that damaged dozens of homes and injured over 20 people. Authorities link these events to organized crime gangs, such as Los Pulpos, which have expanded operations beyond Peru.
No group has claimed responsibility for the nightclub explosion, and the motive remains unclear.
