The Pittsburgh Steelers already have a pair of young quarterbacks in Will Howard and Drew Allar, the latter of whom they picked in the third round of last month’s draft. Yet they still apparently want Aaron Rodgers to play for them, and at least one person is unhappy with the notion.

Over this week, reports emerged that the multiple-time MVP was planning to visit Pittsburgh and re-sign with the reigning AFC North champions. When asked about this development on Thursday’s episode of FS1’s “First Things First”, Nick Wright said (from 3:20 in the video below):

“Every single year the Steelers kick this can down the road is good for the (Baltimore) Ravens. Short-term, yes; the two games with Pittsburgh are a touch harder. But because (Rodgers) is so much better than Drew Allar, they are so much less likely to get a franchise quarterback next year. They are so much more likely to continue to be on this treadmill of mediocrity.”

He continued:

“I think the Steelers’ thirst to not be awful is the worst thing they have going for them, and just not (being) willing to reset for a year. And Rodgers will prevent that. Also, I think Rodgers is going to squeeze them on the money. … They have painted themselves into a corner.”

HC Mike McCarthy gets candid on Steelers’ QB situation during rookie minicamp

During the Steelers’ rookie minicamp on Saturday, coach Mike McCarthy was asked about potentially expanding the QB room with someone like Aaron Rodgers:

“I mean, three quarterbacks is the normal. Four would be awesome.”

Nevertheless, he singled out Drew Allar as someone who fit what he wanted in a quarterback:

“He’s physically gifted. He’s a gifted thrower of the football, but he’s no different than any other young quarterback that I’ve had the opportunity to work with. … It was great to get him on film. … He made a very good first impression.”

The team’s OTAs begin on May 18 and will last until June 12. Mandatory minicamp will be from June 2 to 4.
