To the editor: This text is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks kids face in their very own houses, and we should shield one another and our youngsters as a group (“L.A. County pays $20 million to household of 4-year-old boy who was tortured, killed,” Sept. 30).

Nonetheless, the story is essentially coated from the angle that the federal government, not the household or the group, failed the younger little one. The mother and father of this little boy had a historical past of abuse, but nobody fought for him whereas he was alive. Nobody saved him from his mother and father, not even his great-grandmother.

Whereas the lawsuit in opposition to the Division of Youngster and Household Companies is justified as a result of it was notified and has the authority to make these selections, the federal government just isn’t the one useful resource obtainable. Individuals are additionally a useful resource, household is a useful resource, and a group is a useful resource; we must be the individuals who may be counted on when our youngsters want us.
