Jay Manuel, longtime creative director on America’s Next Top Model, described a frosty reaction from host Tyra Banks after he informed her of his intent to leave the show.

Manuel’s Key Role on the Show

Manuel joined the competition series at its launch in 2005, emerging as a central figure alongside judge Tyra Banks, photographer Nigel Barker, and runway coach J. Alexander. He handled directing and producing photo shoots while coaching models on posing techniques.

Decision to Depart Amid Concerns

In the Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Manuel reflected on the program’s challenging environment two decades on. He explained that the experience began draining him emotionally. “It was slowly depleting me and chipping away at my soul,” he stated. “So it was time to tell Tyra that I wanted to leave the show.”

Their dynamic lacked a standard professional rapport, making the conversation tough. Manuel admitted he feared upsetting Banks or choosing the wrong words. “I tortured myself over the decision. I didn’t come to it lightly,” he shared.

Following a pact after season three to address issues directly, Manuel sent an email expressing deep thanks for the opportunity while signaling his career shift. Banks replied three days later with a curt three words: “I am disappointed.”

Communication Breakdown and Return

Contact ceased after the exchange. While on vacation, Manuel’s attorney relayed a request for one final season, which he accepted partly due to concerns over industry blacklisting.

During their first post-email encounter, Banks initially ignored him. “I hadn’t spoken to Tyra. I was extremely nervous,” Manuel recounted. As they sat together reviewing auditions, she placed an arm around him and sought his input on contestants, but boundaries felt rigid. “It was just clear I was not allowed to speak to her outside of that,” he noted. “I was still trying to process what was going on. It was like psychological torture. I felt broken.”

Banks’ Response in Docuseries

When asked in Reality Check about the situation, Banks declined to elaborate. “I should call Jay. I don’t wanna do this here. But he’s a special man,” she said.

Final Seasons and Abrupt Exit

Manuel contributed to 18 cycles total before exiting ahead of season 19, along with Alexander and Barker. He noted promises of a joint press release for a dignified farewell were unmet; instead, reports framed it as a firing to boost ratings.

“When I wanted to leave, I wasn’t afforded that. And then I work on the show from cycles 10 to 18. I made so many concessions,” Manuel said. “Why would you not allow people who’ve been a part of your show since its inception to move forward in their career with grace? It gives people their dignity.”
