Gov. Greg Abbott despatched a letter Monday directing Texas state businesses to research potential baby care funding fraud, following a significant Minnesota social providers scandal that value taxpayers tens of millions.

“Just lately, the Trump Administration and unbiased journalists have uncovered potential systematic fraud in backed baby care programs in states like Minnesota,” Abbott mentioned in an announcement. “Such fraud won’t ever be tolerated in Texas. Abbott’s letter was addressed to Texas Workforce Fee (TWC) Chairman Jose Esparza and Texas Well being and Human Companies Fee (HHSC) Govt Commissioner Stephanie Muth to steer the investigation. Each businesses have broad authority to strengthen fraud prevention efforts within the state’s baby care program and regulate amenities.

The businesses can have till Feb. 27 to submit a remaining report outlining how they applied anti-fraud measures and investigated any potential misuse of Texas taxpayer {dollars}.

Abbott famous that Texas already has a comparatively low “improper fee price” of 0.43 p.c, in contrast with Minnesota’s roughly 11 p.c, due to the businesses’ sturdy anti-fraud processes already in place.

HHSC and TWC will present a progress report back to the governor’s workplace on Jan. 30, adopted by a remaining report in late February.

The scandal, which emerged in early December, concerned people from the Somali-American group accused of defrauding public assist applications.

Whereas the schemes started with the Feeding Our Future case, which reportedly exploited a federally-funded baby vitamin program through the pandemic, investigators have since uncovered what they describe as an internet of interconnected fraud spanning a number of sectors, together with baby care, Medicaid, housing and autism providers.
