Doug LaMalfa, Republican congressman from California, dies at 65

Washington — Rep. Doug LaMalfa, a California Republican who had been in Congress since 2013, has died, Home GOP Whip Tom Emmer introduced Tuesday. He was 65.

“Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America,” Emmer mentioned in a put up on X. “Our prayers are with Doug’s spouse, Jill, and their youngsters.”

LaMalfa represented California’s 1st Congressional District within the northeastern a part of the state. He served as chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus.

The California Republican, a fourth-generation rice farmer and enterprise proprietor, was a outstanding voice on agriculture and rural points in Congress. He beforehand served within the California State Meeting and state senate.

LaMalfa’s demise narrows the already skinny GOP majority within the Home. Along with his demise and the resignation of Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the social gathering breakdown within the Home stands at 218 Republicans and 213 Democrats, with 4 vacancies.

Rep. Richard Hudson, a North Carolina Republican, mentioned in an announcement that LaMalfa was a “principled conservative and a tireless advocate for the individuals of Northern California.”

“He was by no means afraid to battle for rural communities, farmers, and dealing households. Doug introduced grit, authenticity, and conviction to all the things he did in public service,” Hudson mentioned.

Rep. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican, known as LaMalfa “an excellent colleague and good friend” who “represented California nicely for over a decade.” 

“He can be missed,” Lawler mentioned.
