Dion Sanderson prepares to face Birmingham City for the first time since his departure, aiming to secure a vital win for Derby County. The former Blues captain joined Derby in January, reuniting with manager John Eustace at their fourth Championship club together. Sanderson has emerged as a pivotal defender for the Rams, who hold a four-point lead and one spot above Birmingham in the standings. His contributions helped secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portsmouth on Monday night.

Derby’s Chance to Dash Blues’ Promotion Hopes

Derby hosts Birmingham at Pride Park, where a win could effectively end the visitors’ promotion dreams. Sanderson maintains a professional mindset, treating the fixture like any other. “It’s just another game in my eyes, another game that we will be looking to get three points in,” Sanderson stated. “I don’t really have a game where it’s like, ‘I can’t wait to play this’, it’s about getting the win and moving on.”

When pressed on whether he has a point to prove, Sanderson affirmed, “Yes.” He elaborated, “Every player has a point to prove. As a team we set our standards really high, it’s about getting the job done and finishing on a high.”

Background on Sanderson’s Exit and Derby Move

The 26-year-old defender faced a abrupt exit under Birmingham manager Chris Davies early in their League One title-winning season and was omitted from pre-season preparations last summer. Sanderson awaited transfer opportunities, initially doubting a Derby reunion with Eustace. “At the start of the window I did have a quick conversation with the gaffer and he was like, ‘Listen, I don’t think it will happen so crack on…’ and I was still waiting for other clubs basically, then towards the end of the window they came in and straight away I was like, ‘Yeah, get me there,’” he explained.

“I’ve always said that even if the manager wasn’t here it would still be my first choice. It’s such a big club; the fanbase, the history, the environment.”

Eustace’s Impact at Derby

Unlike pre-season promotion favorites Birmingham, Derby entered the campaign as underdogs. Eustace, sacked by Blues in October 2023 despite a sixth-place standing, has revitalized the Rams, positioning them for a potential play-off push just a year after avoiding relegation on the final day. Sanderson praised the manager: “He makes the squad believe we can beat anyone in this league. He makes us feel like we could play against Man City and beat them. He has great man management skills.”

“He really pinpoints other teams’ weaknesses and we try to exploit it. It comes out on a game day, he knows how to fire everyone up. He’s proved it at every club he’s been at. The positions he’s left the club in or finished in have been really good. He’s a successful manager in my eyes and a lot would say the same.”
