Canada’s final captive whales have acquired a reprieve from loss of life after the federal government conditionally accepted a plan Monday to export them to the USA.

Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson met Monday with officers from Marineland, the shuttered theme park and zoo in Niagara Falls, Ontario, to speak about its proposed plan to maneuver the animals south. The park is in discussions with 4 U.S. establishments to take its 30 beluga whales and 4 dolphins.

“It was a constructive assembly, and I offered conditional approval for export permits,” Thompson stated in a assertion posted on social media Monday. “I’ll subject the ultimate permits as soon as closing required info is acquired from Marineland.”

Marineland pleaded with the minister, telling her repeatedly the park was working out of cash. The park had informed Thompson the animals can be euthanized if the export permits weren’t licensed by Jan. 30, based on a letter she wrote to Marineland on Monday, which was obtained by The Canadian Press information company.

Marineland stated in a press release that it has Thompson’s assist for the relocation of the animals. “We prolong our gratitude to the minister and the Canadian authorities for prioritizing the lives of those exceptional marine mammals,” it stated.

The transfer comes after Marineland offered what it referred to as an pressing rescue resolution to the federal authorities final week.

The park is reportedly in discussions with the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut and SeaWorld, which has a number of U.S. areas.

Marineland is seen in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, on Aug. 14, 2017.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford supported Thompson’s resolution.

“They’ll have a greater house than the place they’re as a result of it is a horrible house they’re in proper now,” Ford stated of the animals. “It wasn’t giant sufficient.”

Twenty whales — one killer whale and 19 belugas — have died at Marineland since 2019, based on an ongoing tally created by The Canadian Press primarily based on inner data and official statements.

In October, Marineland utilized for export permits to maneuver its complement of belugas to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, an aquarium in China. Thompson denied these permits, saying she wouldn’t topic the whales to a future performing in captivity.

That’s in step with a 2019 regulation that banned whale and dolphin captivity, although Marineland’s animals had been grandfathered in.
