Soaring Crime Rates Drive Concerns

Bradford leads the UK’s crime index according to Numbeo data, fueled by rising drug-related incidents and economic crimes. Over the past five years, crime has steadily increased, with residents reporting frequent robberies, vehicle thefts, assaults, drug dealing, and vandalism. Eufy notes: “Bradford struggles with high crime rates. Crime levels sit 90% above the national average, raising safety worries despite widespread security cameras.”

Recent Police Statistics

West Yorkshire Police recorded 560 crimes in Bradford last December, serving a population of approximately 560,000. Key incidents included 166 violent and sexual offenses, 61 shoplifting cases, 42 instances of criminal damage and arson, and 40 reports of antisocial behavior.

Rich History and Attractions

Despite these issues, Bradford boasts impressive Victorian architecture and holds the title of the world’s ‘Wool Capital’ from the Industrial Revolution era. Notable sites include the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Saltaire Village, Salts Mill, the historic Alhambra Theatre, and the National Science and Media Museum.

Affordable Housing Market

Property values remain accessible, with Rightmove data showing an average sale price of £184,715 over the past year. Terraced homes averaged £138,945, semi-detached properties £195,259, and detached houses £319,714.

Mixed Reviews from Visitors

TripAdvisor feedback reflects a divided picture, with both vibrant communities and deprived areas. Wild Rumpus Travel comments: “Like many cities it has nice parts and not so nice parts. It has thriving communities and interesting museums. It also has deprivation and poverty.” Alex Y shares: “I stayed for a few days when working nearby. Found it to be unremarkable. Some bits I saw were no more or less run-down than other parts of the UK I have visited.” Englandsscout adds: “It’s a city that like many others have that have its gritter/ run down side, not a city that would be on many visitors to see list whilst on a holiday from overseas.”
