Bipartisan group of lawmakers to go to Denmark as Trump threatens to take over Greenland

Washington — A bipartisan congressional delegation will go to Denmark later this week for conferences as President Trump threatens to take over Greenland. 

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware is main the journey to Copenhagen, which incorporates a number of different members of Congress, together with Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina. The group is predicted to fulfill on Friday and Saturday with authorities officers and enterprise leaders from Denmark and Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory. 

The journey comes as Mr. Trump has more and more expressed a need to amass Greenland, and he has not dominated out army motion. His remarks about potential army involvement have prompted bipartisan criticism from lawmakers who’ve stated they don’t assist buying Greenland utilizing army drive, and backlash from Denmark.

“If we do not take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland, and I’m not going to let that occur,” Mr. Trump stated Sunday. 

Mr. Trump stated he open to creating a deal as a result of “it is simpler,” however added that “by hook or by crook, we will have Greenland.” 

Lawmakers stated this week’s journey is supposed to point out unity with Denmark, a NATO ally. 

“At a time of accelerating worldwide instability, we have to draw nearer to our allies, not drive them away, and this delegation will ship a transparent message that Congress is dedicated to NATO and our community of alliances,” Coons stated in a press release. 

“I consider it’s essential that Congress stands united in supporting our allies and respecting the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland,” Tillis stated in a press release. 

Trump administration officers are set to fulfill with Danish officers about Greenland on Wednesday, diplomatic sources informed CBS Information.
