To the editor: So, President Trump imposes tariffs on different international locations, stifling worldwide commerce and leaving American farmers unable to promote their crops as they used to (“Trump is proposing a $12-billion help package deal for farmers hit by his commerce conflict with China,” Dec. 8).

Now, the president goes to bail out farmers with a $12-billion help package deal to resolve the issue that he created? Wouldn’t it have made extra financial sense to not impose the tariffs to start with?

President Reagan was proper; “Excessive tariffs inevitably result in retaliation by overseas international locations and the triggering of fierce commerce wars” that finally “harm each American employee and shopper.”

Will Trump now demand a peace prize from the farmers of America for rescuing them … from himself?
