Driver in custody after hanging pedestrians in France, inside minister says

LONDON — A driver was taken into custody after allegedly hanging and injuring a number of pedestrians and cyclists in southwestern France, the inside minister mentioned.

“An investigation has been opened,” Laurent Nunez, the minister, mentioned in French on social media. “On the request of the prime minister, I’m heading to the scene.”

French gendarmes work close to the burnt automobile utilized by a driver who rammed into pedestrians and cyclists in Saint-Pierre-d’Oleron on the touristic French island of Ile d’Oleron, off the Atlantic coast, France, Nov. 5, 2025.

The strikes appeared to have been alongside a “route” by Saint Pierre and Dolus, two villages about 4 miles aside on the island of Oleron, Nunez mentioned.

Two of those that have been struck have been in severe situation and three others have been injured, he added.
