“None of them can miss two paychecks,” Duffy stated on CNBC’s “Squawk Field” on Monday. “All of them begin — their residence funds collapse, and so they’re all going to have to have a look at taking second jobs or quitting and entering into one other line of labor. And the consequence of that could be very actual for our air system.”

Duffy underscored the dire want for air site visitors controllers, including that the system is brief anyplace from 2,000 to three,000 controllers.

“I’m attempting to place extra air site visitors controllers into the system,” he stated.

On Monday morning, greater than 900 flights touring inside, to and out of U.S. airports have been delayed, and greater than 430 have been canceled, based on FlightAware.com. John F. It isn’t instantly clear if staffing shortages straight brought about the delays and cancellations Monday.

The unpredictable flight schedule has pissed off vacationers. Many are questioning the protection of air journey if management towers aren’t absolutely staffed.

Duffy stated delays and cancellations are an try to make air journey safer.

“You will see extra delays, you may see extra cancellations of flights, and that’s as a result of we gradual site visitors down as a result of we don’t have sufficient controllers within the towers and TRACONs to verify we will navigate the flights,” he stated, referring to terminal radar strategy management services. “So, that’s a device that we now have to maintain the system secure.”

If air journey was unsafe, the Transportation Division would “shut the entire airspace down,” Duffy stated.

“We received’t let individuals journey,” he stated. “We’re not there at this level. It’s simply vital delays.”
