To the editor: The explanation we want a free press is so it may possibly report on authorities and enterprise failures in addition to their achievements. The Protection Division’s coverage that solely data licensed by the division may be reported by the media is ridiculous (“‘With out precedent’: Nearly all information shops reject restrictive Pentagon press coverage,” Oct. 14).

Nearly each governmental company within the nation and each company would little question like to set this kind of coverage in place: “Print and broadcast solely what we provide you with, don’t dig out something that makes us look dangerous.”

After all, the Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin exerted management over the press, as did Germany’s Adolf Hitler. Does President Trump wish to match this mould?
