Hollywood is split over the conflict in Gaza and is expressing it via dueling open letters.

Greater than 5,000 actors and filmmakers, together with Pedro Pascal, Javier Bardem and Selena Gomez, signed an open letter on Sept. 9 pledging to boycott Israeli movie teams.

Now, greater than 1,200 different Hollywood figures, amongst them Liev Schreiber, Mayim Bialik and Sharon Osbourne, have signed an analogous letter rejecting the boycott.

Javier Bardem arrives for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, pictured here in Los Angeles in July 2025, is one among many Hollywood figures to pledge not to work with Israeli movie industry companies in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“We can not keep silent when a narrative is become a weapon, when lies are dressed up as justice, and when artists are misled into amplifying antisemitic propaganda,” states the letter, which was printed on Thursday by the leisure trade nonprofits Artistic Group For Peace and The Brigade.

Condemning the primary open letter as “a doc of misinformation that advocates for arbitrary censorship and the erasure of artwork,” the signers ask the leisure trade to “reject this discriminatory and antisemitic boycott name that solely provides one other roadblock on the trail to peace.”

The letter goes on to say that the pledge “erases dissenting Israeli voices, legitimizes falsehoods, and shields Hamas from blame.”

Addressing the signers of the boycott pledge, the letter urges, “In order for you peace, “name for the instant launch of the remaining hostages” and “stand towards Hamas.”

Individuals who signed the unique letter pledged to keep away from screening movies or working with Israeli movie establishments that they allege are “implicated in genocide and apartheid towards the Palestinian individuals.” It was printed in 5 languages by Filmmakers for Palestine – which describes itself as “a name by and for filmmakers and cinema staff to face for an finish to genocide, and for a free Palestine.” Israel strongly denies allegations that it’s committing genocide in Gaza.

Along with Pascal, Bardem and Gomez, the unique letter was signed by Emma Stone, Gael Garcia Bernal, Alyssa Milano, Olivia Colman, Brian Cox and Ilana Glazer, amongst many others. Filmmakers included Ava DuVernay, Adam McKay and Yorgos Lanthimos.

In an announcement to NPR, Filmmakers for Palestine dismissed the letter from Artistic Group for Peace as “nothing greater than thinly veiled anti-Palestinian racism.”

When celebrities show up to protest, the media follows — but so does the backlash

The brand new letter has fewer A-list expertise amongst its signatories. However it contains such behind-the-scenes heavyweights as former Paramount World chair Shari Redstone, Mattel chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz, Will & Grace creator David Kohan, and Fernando Szew, CEO of FOX Leisure World.

The letter follows a response to the boycott by Paramount Studios, the one main studio to talk out on the decision for a boycott. “Silencing particular person artistic artists primarily based on their nationality doesn’t promote higher understanding or advance the reason for peace,” a assertion issued on behalf of Paramount chief communications officer Melissa Zukerman on Sept. 12 reads. “The worldwide leisure trade needs to be encouraging artists to inform their tales and share their concepts with audiences all through the world. We want extra engagement and communication — not much less.”
