To the editor: There may be nothing fallacious with making your individual alternative in the way you welcome your subsequent pet. Pet possession ought to be accessible to everybody. Whether or not a canine comes from a shelter, a rescue accomplice, a neighbor or accountable breeder, pets are a pleasure of life meant for all.

What’s fallacious is exploitative “pet brokers” who revenue from sourcing canines from mass breeding amenities that neglect animals (“California lawmakers move invoice that may bar some fashionable pet sellers,” Sept. 8). These brokers typically boast that their requirements exceed animal welfare rules. But investigations, together with the current Los Angeles Occasions exposé, reveal a special actuality: sick puppies, overbred mom canines and well-intentioned people and households misled about the true origins of their pets.

California led in 2019 by barring pet shops from promoting inhumanely, commercially bred canines. Now, Gov. Gavin Newsom can end the job. By signing Meeting Invoice 519, he can shut the web loophole these bad-faith brokers exploit and make good on the state’s promise to curb this cruelty.
