Urban Meyer’s caution surrounding Arch Manning was justified.

The former Ohio State football coach and current FOX college football analyst had tempered expectations for the Longhorns’ quarterback and foresaw a “low-scoring” affair between the Buckeyes and Texas in Week 1.

Both predictions came to fruition. Now, Meyer’s urging Texas fans and Manning supporters to not panic.

“I went back and watched every snap of Arch Manning, and I keep hearing about [him being the] potential first choose within the NFL Draft [and winning the] Heisman Trophy,” Meyer stated on Thursday’s version of “The Herd.”

“I hold saying, ‘Cease this. That is not honest to this man. Let him develop as a participant.’ He’ll be a a lot completely different participant in 4 to 5 weeks. He wasn’t prepared for that.”

Nonetheless, Manning definitely did not dwell as much as the hype in his debut because the Longhorns’ starter. He threw for simply 170 yards, one landing and an interception in Texas’ 14-7 loss to Ohio State.

Meyer, although, is assured that the Longhorns’ downside is not Manning’s expertise. “I used to be just a little disillusioned with the offensive talent in Texas,” he stated. “I did not see guys open. I did not see the explosiveness you anticipate.”

Texas misplaced its prime large receiver from final season, Matthew Golden, who was drafted within the first spherical of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Inexperienced Bay Packers. The Longhorns’ second main receiver from 2024, Isaiah Bond, signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent, whereas Johntay Prepare dinner, a extremely rated 2023 WR recruit, transferred out.

That stated, Manning’s struggles could be accredited to a couple issues, in accordance with Meyer: his lack of expertise, Texas’ difference-making expertise and a powerful scheme from new Ohio State defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia.

“There [are] a pair widespread denominators of nice quarterbacks,” Meyer stated. “They’ve nice gamers round them – and possibly there are — I did not see that. The fact is the quarterbacks get far an excessive amount of credit score, far an excessive amount of blame. There weren’t individuals open.”

As a substitute of doubting Manning, Meyer is encouraging followers to seek out some persistence to let the younger quarterback develop.
