US fighters intercept Russian plane off Alaska for third time in every week

LONDON — Fighters from the North American Aerospace Protection Command (NORAD) on Sunday intercepted a Russian plane within the Alaskan Air Protection Identification Zone for the third time prior to now week, the command stated in an announcement.

One E-3 Sentry command and management plane, two F-16 fighters and two KC-135s Stratotankers had been dispatched “to intercept and visually determine” a Russian Il-20 surveillance and reconnaissance working within the Alaskan ADIZ, NORAD stated.

The Russian plane remained in worldwide airspace and didn’t enter American or Canadian airspace, NORAD stated in its assertion. “This Russian exercise within the Alaskan ADIZ happens frequently and isn’t seen as a menace,” it added.

An ADIZ “begins the place sovereign airspace ends and is an outlined stretch of worldwide airspace that requires the prepared identification of all plane within the curiosity of nationwide safety,” NORAD stated.

Over the previous week, American F-16 fighters have been dispatched twice — as soon as on Aug. 21 and as soon as on Aug. 20 — to intercept Russian Il-20 plane working within the Alaska ADIZ.

“NORAD employs a layered protection community of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars and fighter plane to detect and observe plane and inform acceptable actions,” the command stated in its Sunday assertion.

“NORAD stays able to make use of various response choices in protection of North America,” it added.
