NYC opens first-in-the-nation homeless shelter for transgender folks

“We couldn’t be prouder to make this historic announcement that strongly affirms our values and dedication to strengthening the protection web for transgender New Yorkers at a time when their rights are roundly beneath assault,” Molly Wasow Park, Division of Social Providers commissioner, stated in an announcement. “Ace’s Place will provide Transgender New Yorkers a protected place to heal and stabilize in trauma-informed settings with the assist of employees who’re deeply invested of their progress and wellbeing.”

Sean Ebony Coleman, founder and CEO of Vacation spot Tomorrow, stated Ace’s Place is a “hard-fought declaration that our Transgender and gender nonconforming siblings will now not be pushed to the margins.”

“Ace’s Place is a community-driven reply to systemic neglect, and it’s solely the start,” Coleman stated in an announcement.

Trans folks disproportionately expertise homelessness, partly as a result of going through extra employment discrimination. The 2022 U.S. Trans Survey, the biggest nationwide survey of trans folks, with greater than 90,000 respondents, discovered that 30% of respondents reported experiencing homelessness of their lifetimes. Eleven % of those that had ever held a job stated they’d been fired, pressured to resign, misplaced the job or been laid off due to their gender identification or expression. Multiple-third (34%) of respondents have been experiencing poverty.

Ace’s Place is certainly one of solely two organizations in New York Metropolis that may present housing for adults within the LGBTQ neighborhood. Almost all the metropolis’s LGBTQ shelters are for folks beneath 25.
