The Indiana Fever suffered their second defeat of the season on Friday, falling 104-102 to the Washington Mystics in overtime. The loss frustrated Caitlin Clark’s fans, many of whom were upset with the team for letting the game slip away despite the guard’s 32-point performance.
Clark’s stellar outing was highlighted by the Fever’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, which shared a post underscoring her box score.
“Caitlin Clark tonight vs. Washington,” the handle captioned the post.
Despite recording 32 points and eight assists, the performance was not enough to secure Indiana the win, as Clark’s supporters expressed their frustration under the post, calling out everyone, including Kelsey Mitchell and head coach Stephanie White.
Fans were particularly disappointed with the duo after Mitchell missed the game-winning shot, while White drew up the final play for the veteran instead of Clark.
While this left many fans heated, leading to scathing criticism of both Mitchell and the coach, a few focused on the positives, highlighting the guard’s stellar performance.
Despite the contrasting reactions, fans of the player and the organization will be glad about Clark’s 32-point outing. The Fever star has started all three games this season, following an injury-laden campaign last term.
She has begun the season with promise, gradually improving with each game. After back-to-back 20-point outings, the guard erupted against the Mystics on Friday, shooting 10-of-32 from the field while knocking down seven three-pointers.
Despite her performance, Indiana could not secure the win and has yet to record a home victory, losing both games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to start the season. Although the team holds a 1-2 record, there are positives to build on, including Clark’s form, as they look to put together a winning run.
Caitlin Clark points to a key area for improvement after the Fever’s overtime loss
The Indiana Fever suffered a disappointing loss to the Washington Mystics on Friday, undoing their win in Los Angeles earlier this week. The defeat once again highlighted their defensive struggles, as Indiana conceded over 100 points for the second time this season.
After the game, Clark discussed how this was an area they could improve on during the post-game presser.
“I think shots did start falling. I think we’ve been letting that dictate how well we play defense too much, which is disappointing for us as a group,” Clark said (Timestamp: 0:15). “We’ve got to be able to defend all the time. I think that’s our biggest area of growth.”
The Fever will have the opportunity to showcase a better defensive display on Sunday as they host the Seattle Storm at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
