Spygate Hearing Delayed Until May 19
Spying allegations against Southampton could delay resolution until Tuesday, May 19, raising uncertainty over the Championship play-off final scheduled for next week. The EFL charged the club last week after Middlesbrough reported a staff member observing and recording a training session at their facility ahead of the semi-final.
The league requests an independent commission to review the case urgently. Officials confirm the hearing occurs on or before May 19, though the precise date remains under discussion. The EFL plans for the final to proceed as scheduled on Saturday, May 23, at 4:30 p.m. at Wembley Stadium, but emphasizes that disciplinary outcomes may alter the date, time, or venue.
Fans of Southampton and Hull City receive warnings that changes remain possible due to the independent hearing process.
Southampton Risks Worst Punishment: Play-Off Expulsion
Sources indicate Southampton faces potential expulsion from the play-offs, barring promotion to the Premier League if the commission upholds the spying charge. Middlesbrough’s complaint details a staff member captured on camera during the session, with the individual now identified.
Middlesbrough prepares to step in for the final against Hull City and continues training in anticipation of such an outcome.
Venue Changes Unlikely at Wembley
Shifting the final to the following weekend proves impossible due to Wembley’s packed schedule, including rugby league Challenge Cup finals on May 30 and 31, the Women’s FA Cup final, and Harry Styles concerts from June 12 to July 4. Alternative venues may emerge if needed, even as ticket sales launch today with 35,984 allocations each for Southampton and Hull.
EFL Statement in Full
The EFL released the following statement: “The Independent Disciplinary Commission hearing will take place on or before Tuesday, 19 May. The exact date remains under discussion and is expected to be confirmed shortly. The Commission will issue its decision as soon as possible following consideration of the relevant submissions and evidence. As the proceedings are being conducted by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, the EFL does not control the proposed timetable. Notwithstanding this, the EFL continues to plan on the basis that the Championship play-off final will take place as scheduled on Saturday May 23, with the kick-off time confirmed as 4.30pm. Supporters should, however, be aware that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings may yet result in changes to the fixture. The EFL has a number of contingency plans should they be required, which also includes consideration of any appeal process, if required.”
Contingency Plans in Place
The EFL prepares multiple contingencies, including appeals, should Southampton contest an adverse ruling. While the Saints prepare to face Hull City on May 23, their participation hinges on the commission’s decision by May 19.
