Punjab Kings (PBKS) slumped to their fifth straight defeat with a six-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) in a last-over thriller on Thursday, May 14. Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss for MI and elected to field first at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
PBKS openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh kicked things off with a 50-run partnership off 33 balls. Prabhsimran slammed his fifth half-century in IPL 2026, scoring 57 off 32 balls.
However, Punjab found themselves in a precarious position, losing wickets at regular intervals in the middle overs. Azmatullah Omarzai rescued the side with a quick-fire 38 off 17 balls.
PBKS finished 200/8 in 20 overs. Shardul Thakur was the most successful bowler for MI, bagging a four-wicket haul. Tilak Varma played an exceptional knock under pressure in the run chase.
The southpaw remained unbeaten on 75 off just 33 balls. Ryan Rickelton scored 48 off 23 at the top of the order, while Will Jacks made an impact with a late cameo of 25* off 10 balls. MI ultimately chased down the target with one ball to spare.
The thrilling game had several exciting moments. Here, we take a look at three of those that generated a significant buzz among the fans.
#3 Shardul Thakur turns the game on its head with his twin strikes
Shardul Thakur had a poor start to his spell, conceding 15 runs from his first over in the powerplay. He returned to the attack in the 12th over, where he began with a wide followed by a six.
However, the pacer bounced back by getting rid of the well-set Prabhsimran Singh on the second ball. It was a slot ball that the PBKS opener failed to get the desired connection while looking to clear the long-on fence, and was caught by Corbin Bosch.
Shreyas Iyer walked out to bat next and smashed a four with an authoritative cut shot on the first ball. Shardul redeemed himself with a peach of a delivery. The PBKS skipper was undone by the away movement, and the ball beat his bat and crashed into the off stump.
#2 Yuzvendra Chahal cleans up Rohit Sharma with a stunning delivery
Rohit Sharma struggled to get going in the run chase. The ace batter scored 25 runs off 26 balls before perishing to Yuzvendra Chahal in the 10th over. The veteran bowler dished out a quicker delivery on the off stump.
The former MI skipper went for a lofted drive but was completely bamboozled as the ball skidded through after pitching before hitting the off stump. The breakthrough swung the momentum in PBKS’ favor as they dismissed Naman Dhir and Sharma in quick succession.

#1 Tilak Varma stuns PBKS with last-over heroics
MI needed 15 runs to win from the final over. Xavier Bartlett bowled the all-important over and started with a low full-toss outside off stump. Will Jacks capitalized on it by hitting a six over long-off, bringing the equation down to nine off five balls.
Jacks took a single on the next ball. Bartlett bowled a short ball to Tilak Varma, who was beaten while looking to play it on the leg side. With eight needed from three balls, the speedster continued his short-ball ploy.
However, he went with a slower one this time. Varma read the variation early and dispatched the ball over the cover for a maximum. He sealed victory for his side by clearing the deep square leg boundary on the next ball for another six.
