Instagram introduces Instants, a fresh take on ephemeral photo sharing designed for spontaneous snaps. This feature appears in the primary app and as a standalone application, both named Instants. Users capture photos that vanish after friends view them, complete with reaction and reply options.

Key Features in the Main Instagram App

Photos remain archived for up to one year, allowing users to compile them into story recaps later. Access Instants directly from the direct messages inbox by tapping the photo stack icon in the bottom right. Customization limits to adding captions only—no filters or editing tools available, and camera roll uploads are not supported.

Select recipients from close friends or mutual connections before sending. An undo option lets users retract the photo before it reaches recipients. For incoming Instants, hold the inbox icon and swipe right to snooze, or swipe left to resume viewing.

Dedicated Instants App

Instagram tests the standalone Instants app in select countries on iOS and Android. “We’ve been testing Instants for a while, and one thing we heard was that people wanted a quicker, easier way to get into the camera,” the company stated in a recent blog post.

Safety and Privacy Measures

Instants incorporates Instagram’s standard safety tools, such as blocking and muting users. Teen accounts under parental supervision inherit restrictions, including time limits, screenshot and screen recording blocks, and default access limits from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Parents receive notifications when a supervised teen downloads the app.

Instagram’s History with Ephemeral Formats

This launch continues Instagram’s efforts to compete in temporary sharing, following Snapchat and BeReal. Previous ventures include the 2014 Bolt app for rapid photo exchanges and Candid Stories four years ago, a BeReal-inspired release.
