Karl Stefanovic, the 51-year-old host of the Today show, has indicated that a radio career awaits him in the near future. During a discussion with television executive Maz Farrelly at the annual Cairns Crocodiles creative summit, Stefanovic shared his intentions.
Testing the Radio Waters
“I probably will do radio, and I will more than likely just dip my toe in the water to see if I like it before I even thought about going to do breakfast radio,” Stefanovic stated. He added, “I want exposure, I want to see what radio is like.”
The host emphasized his ongoing commitment to television, noting, “I will continue doing TV, and this show (The Karl Stefanovic Podcast) right now is my biggest priority outside of my commitments for Channel 9 because I just think there’s so much room for growth.”
Rumors of a Major Switch
Speculation suggests Stefanovic may leave his $3 million annual contract with Channel Nine upon its expiration in December. Sources indicate he has signed a memorandum of understanding with radio network ARN, opening the door to a transition.
Industry talk points to him potentially taking over the breakfast slot vacated by The Kyle and Jackie O Show. He is reportedly considering former Project host Carrie Bickmore as a co-host; she currently leads a national drive program on the Hit Network.
Early Mornings Prompt Change
The grueling schedule of Today, with 5:30 a.m. starts requiring wake-ups as early as 3:30 a.m., appears to be a key factor. Media commentator Andrew Mercado observed that Stefanovic may seek a more standard nine-to-five routine.
Podcast Launch Signals New Ventures
Stefanovic recently debuted his YouTube podcast, describing it enthusiastically: “So, I have some pretty exciting news. I have this curious beast that lives inside my head, and I’m about to unleash that beast.” He assured fans of complete creative control over the independent project.
Stefanovic joined Today in 2005 but faced dismissal years later amid declining ratings and personal scrutiny.
