Davidson described clicking on a graphic video at age eight, featuring six 70-year-old men engaged in explicit acts to the Andy Griffith theme song. ‘I clicked it, and it was horrible. It’s a video of six 70-year-old men, white guys, b***ing each other to the Andy Griffith theme song,’ he detailed, whistling the tune for the audience. ‘I watched the whole thing cuz I was eight, and I was [wondering], “What happens?”‘
Grandfather’s Confrontation
Hearing his grandfather return from a Knights of Columbus outing, Davidson rushed to shut off the video, but it was too late. The grandfather demanded to know what he was watching. ‘He gets downstairs. He goes, “What are you watching?” I go, “Nothing.” He goes, “Come on. Is it our favorite girl?” I go, “That’s gross. ‘Cause your favorite girl should be grandma.”‘
The grandfather then grabbed Davidson by the neck and insisted, ‘Turn on the f***ing screen.’ Davidson complied, accidentally turning up the volume too. After viewing the content, the grandfather punched the screen, shattering the computer, turned away, and declared, ‘Peter, we are never to speak of this.’
Family Background and Tensions
Davidson grew up with a single mother after his father, New York City firefighter Scott Davidson, perished in the September 11 attacks. He maintains a close bond with his paternal grandfather, Stephen Davidson, who appeared in his 2020 film The King of Staten Island.
In another recent set, Davidson distinguished his grandfathers, expressing distance from his maternal one. ‘He got the lung cancer and I’m not that close with him. I’m close with my dad’s dad.
