Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold their recorded music catalog to Warner Music Group in a deal exceeding $300 million (£220 million). The band relinquishes control of all master recordings, which they have held with the label since the 1991 release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Warner Music Group now collects all future revenue from streaming, radio airplay, sales, and licensing.
Deal Background and Financing
This transaction follows a prior agreement where the band sold publishing rights to Hipgnosis, now known as Recognition Music Group, for about $140 million (£102 million). The latest deal receives funding through a joint venture between Warner Music Group and investment firm Bain Capital, which established a $1.2 billion (£880 million) fund last year to purchase prominent music catalogs.
The Chili Peppers’ catalog generates approximately $26 million (£19 million) annually, with rights previously managed directly by the band members.
Recent Album Success
The band’s most recent studio albums, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, both launched in 2022, achieved strong commercial performance. Each reached the top three on the US and UK albums charts.
Broad Industry Trend
Numerous prominent artists have offloaded their back catalogs and publishing rights in recent years. Bruce Springsteen secured around $500 million for his full music library in 2021. Similar transactions involve Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Neil Young, Deftones, and Jack White. More recent sales include Slipknot’s $120 million deal with HarbourView Equity Partners, Pink Floyd’s $400 million agreement, and deals by Queen, KISS, Britney Spears, and Tame Impala.
Additional Band Updates
The Netflix documentary The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel, which explores the band’s early days and founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, premiered last month. Although band members participated in interviews but distanced themselves from the project, bassist Flea praised it as “a beautifully made film” that “filled my heart right to the top, not without a good dose of lifelong melancholy.”
Frontman Anthony Kiedis’ girlfriend, Eileen Kelly, recently shared insights on their age-gap relationship, describing him as “one lucky bastard.”
