Ipswich Town players worry that manager Kieran McKenna could attract offers from Premier League rivals after guiding the team back to the top flight for a second time.

Back-to-Back Promotions Under McKenna

The Tractor Boys earned an immediate return to the Premier League from the Championship following last season’s relegation. McKenna, who holds a contract until June 2028, has delivered three promotions with the club in four seasons. Any interested club would need to pay substantial compensation to secure his services.

Strong Reputation Draws Interest

The 39-year-old featured on Chelsea’s shortlist before Enzo Maresca’s appointment in summer 2024 and drew attention from Brighton. Crystal Palace, currently searching for a new manager this summer, counts McKenna among its admirers at Selhurst Park.

McKenna shows no desire to depart Ipswich, yet promoted managers often grapple with building a competitive Premier League squad while maintaining financial stability.

Financial Pressures and Transfers

In the 2024-25 season, Ipswich invested over £130 million but earned just 22 points across 38 games. Last summer, the club generated approximately £26 million in transfer profits by selling Omari Hutchinson to Nottingham Forest and Liam Delap to Chelsea.

McKenna Celebrates Hard-Fought Success

After clinching the third promotion with a 3-0 victory over QPR, McKenna addressed the fans: “It means a lot. It’s probably been the hardest one, if I’m honest. It’s brilliant. I know how hard we’ve had to work to turn it around. As a club we had such a climb and a steep fall. We’ve had to rebuild this team under difficult circumstances and we deserve to be where we are.

‘It was special to do it back-to-back with basically the same group of players. I don’t think it will ever be repeated again with the way finances are going. This one has been a big challenge. I know how hard we have had to work for it and that it could have gone in completely different direction so I’m proud we kept it together and get it over the line.’”
