President Donald Trump sharply criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a discussion in the Oval Office, accusing him of making a “big mistake” by not providing support to address the situation in Iran. Trump declined to express confidence in Starmer’s leadership and stopped short of calling for his replacement.
Strained US-UK Ties Under Starmer
Trump described Starmer as a “nice man” but emphasized his lack of support. “He hasn’t been supportive and I think it’s a big mistake,” Trump stated, adding that Starmer is “not Winston Churchill.” He praised the historic US-UK relationship as the “oldest, the longest,” and formerly the best, but noted it changed with Starmer’s arrival.
When asked about Starmer’s future, Trump deferred to the British public, saying it was their decision, not his.
Trade Deal and Gratitude Concerns
Speaking alongside Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Trump pointed to a recent trade agreement with the UK. He claimed the UK struggled to negotiate under the Biden administration due to a lack of effective leadership there. “But we made a deal, we made a good deal for them, and frankly, probably wasn’t appreciated,” Trump remarked.
Trump also expressed anticipation for an upcoming visit from the King.
Aircraft Carriers and Timing Dispute
Trump voiced disappointment over Starmer’s offer to deploy two aircraft carriers. “Keir was willing to send two aircraft carriers after we won… I said no, no, we want things sent before the war, not after the war is won,” he explained. “I’m disappointed with Keir. I like him, I think he’s a nice man, but I’m disappointed.”
Churchill Bust Reference
Gesturing to the Winston Churchill bust in the Oval Office, Trump recounted its history. He claimed former President Barack Obama sent it back to England and did not want it there. Trump said he insisted on bringing it back upon taking office.
Records show the bust remained in the White House during Obama’s presidency, displayed in another location rather than being returned to the UK.
