During the Cheltenham Festival, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, and Carole Middleton shared laughs and embraces in the Royal Box, signaling a strong rapport among the group.

Long-Standing Connections and New Alliances

Camilla and Princess Anne share a connection spanning over 50 years, stemming from Anne’s relationship with Andrew Parker Bowles in 1970, three years before Camilla’s marriage to him. The standout moment came as Catherine’s 71-year-old mother, Carole, warmly interacted with Camilla, 78, and Anne, 75, forming an instant bond.

Carole arrived alongside Zara Tindall, 44, in matching charcoal-grey herringbone wool coats, hinting at prior coordination. Her interests in horses, equestrian events, and outdoor activities align seamlessly with those of Zara, Camilla, and Anne, but her unwavering family loyalty stands out as her primary strength.

Shifting Perceptions Within the Royal Circle

Earlier, some in Prince William’s post-university social group mocked Carole’s background with ‘doors to manual’ jabs, referencing her time as British Airways cabin crew starting at age 21 before marrying Michael Middleton in 1980. Her parents had worked in a factory and a jewellery shop.

Recent scenes at Cheltenham confirm senior royals now view Carole as a dependable ally. Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine and royal biographer, noted the significance: “I believe she must have been invited by the Queen to have been in the Royal Box, since Her Majesty was hosting the box. If Carole was there for the whole day, she likely would have been a lunch guest too.”

Carole’s choice of hat—a £115 blue Hicks & Brown felt fedora borrowed from her daughter Catherine—underscored family solidarity. Catherine had worn it to a 2020 church service at Sandringham with senior royals.

Emerging Role in the Royal Family

Prince William and Catherine regard Zara and Mike Tindall—loyal non-working royals—as potential contributors to a future streamlined monarchy. William particularly values Carole’s counsel, drawing on her support during his early struggles with royal pressures.

Carole may appear at more events in place of the busy couple, offering reliable companionship to Camilla or Anne, especially as the House of York’s influence wanes. Once a minor non-working royal, Sarah Ferguson faces scrutiny from Jeffrey Epstein files that tarnish her past role.

Carole now steps into a pivotal position, potentially providing essential backing for future King William and Queen Catherine.
