Michael Carrick asserts that Manchester United can secure the Premier League title within the next two years, provided the entire club commits to the intense effort required. The club introduced ‘Project 150’ under Ineos leadership, aiming to reclaim the top spot by the 150th anniversary in 2028. Chief executive Omar Berrada outlined this goal to staff in September 2024.

Strong Recent Form Signals Progress

United sit third in the Premier League standings entering the weekend, fueled by 19 points from their last eight games under Carrick. This surge positions them for a likely Champions League return next season. They trail leaders Arsenal by 16 points but hold a game in hand. Carrick’s tenure highlights the squad’s potential, especially ahead of a transfer window focused on midfield reinforcements.

Carrick Emphasizes Step-by-Step Approach

Carrick maintains a grounded outlook despite the optimism. “You’ve got to take it step by step,” he stated. “Certainly we want to keep improving and we want to keep moving up the table. At the moment, being where we are, it’s an exciting time because we’ve got something to play for.”

He added that while Champions League qualification drives the current campaign, loftier goals beckon. “We’d love to be playing for something a little bit more, a little bit higher, and really challenging for leagues. There’s no way you can just say it’s going to happen and assume it’s going to happen.”

Path to Glory Demands Dedication

Ineos announced the 2028 target shortly after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority investment. Last season’s 15th-place finish under Ruben Amorim made the ambition seem remote, but Carrick has instilled fresh hope at Old Trafford. As a five-time Premier League champion with United, he understands the challenge.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to go into that and a lot of things that need to be put in place to achieve that,” Carrick explained. “It’s tough to win the Premier League and we understand that, but certainly we are definitely working towards it. We feel that’s where we want to be. We have been in the past and we want to get there again, but it’s certainly just not straightforward. We’re certainly hungry to do it.”
