An abandoned aircraft hangar in Oxfordshire transforms into the UK’s first automotive resort through a £4 million makeover. Situated at Bicester Motion, a 444-acre former RAF base, Hangar 137 at the Bicester Heritage site on Buckingham Road becomes a two-storey indoor electric karting venue with diverse entertainment options.

Project Details

Cherwell District Council approves the redevelopment plans in January, and TeamSport, an indoor karting operator, takes possession of the 31,000 sq ft hangar. Contractors install a 500-metre electric karting circuit across two levels, topped by a mezzanine with a bowling zone, workshop space, and spectator viewing areas. The initiative integrates with Bicester Motion’s vision, where dozens of automotive and mobility companies already operate amid motorsport activities.

Historical Significance and Preservation

Built in 1926 as a Type A hangar for the Royal Air Force between the World Wars, the structure gains new life while retaining its heritage. Daniel Geoghegan, CEO at Bicester Motion, states: “The practical completion of Hangar 137 in its centenary year is a significant achievement for the estate and a powerful example of what heritage regeneration can deliver. This 1926 Type A hangar was built at a defining moment in Britain’s aviation history. Our responsibility has been to protect that significance while ensuring the building can support a viable, modern commercial use.”

The site now supports over 50 companies in automotive, aviation, engineering, and mobility fields, aligning with efforts to revitalize historic buildings for contemporary businesses.

Community and Economic Impact

TeamSport prepares interior transformations to create a family-friendly destination. Gavin Adair, CEO of TeamSport, comments: “We’re absolutely delighted to have the keys to Hangar 137 and officially begin our journey at Bicester Motion. We’ll now start work on transforming this incredible historic hangar into a spectacular two-level indoor e-karting and entertainment centre that the whole community can enjoy.”

The plans add 40 new parking spaces. Council assessments confirm the project secures the building’s future, delivering job creation and leisure opportunities for residents.
