Aaron Pierre joins the cast of James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming Superman sequel, reprising his role as John Stewart. Production begins in mid-2026, with the film slated for theaters on July 9, 2027.
Lanterns Debuts John Stewart
Pierre debuts as the fan-favorite Green Lantern, John Stewart, in the HBO series Lanterns, premiering this August on Max and other streaming platforms. In the show, rookie Lantern Stewart teams up with veteran Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, to probe a murder mystery in rural America.
James Gunn’s Casting Pattern
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, frequently announces new cast members on social media, as seen with last December’s reveal of Lars Eidinger as the villain Brainiac. Confirmation of Pierre’s role appears imminent.
Exploring a DC Romance
The exact role of John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow remains under wraps. However, Isabela Merced, who portrays Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl in the first DCU Chapter One film Superman, hints at potential romantic developments between Stewart and Hawkgirl.
Speaking during the Superman press tour, Merced shared with Nerdist: “I really love the idea, and that’s why I love Lois and Clark stories — like, that alien-human love story. There’s just something so romantic about that to me. It’s like ‘We shouldn’t, but we should, but we shouldn’t.'”
Simplifying Comic Complexities
DC Comics history complicates the Stewart-Hawkgirl dynamic, often linking Stewart to Shayera Hol (Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman) and Saunders to Carter Hall (Hawkman). Retcons have muddled Hawkgirl’s backstory, but the DCU offers a chance to streamline it—perhaps by sparking chemistry between Stewart and Saunders in Man of Tomorrow.
