An Alberta family faces a devastating loss after purchasing what they believed was a legitimate new Ford F-150 from a Ponoka dealership, only for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to seize it as stolen just weeks later.

Unexpected Seizure Shocks Buyers

Ashutosh Pathak and his brother carefully selected the truck from Summit Ram in Ponoka, part of Kaizen Auto Group, in October 2025. They inspected the vehicle thoroughly, verified the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and paid nearly $40,000 using their line of credit and savings. “We found the truck in Ponoka, Summit Ram. As any consumer would do, we went in there and checked and inspected the vehicle,” Pathak explained.

However, in November 2025, the RCMP seized the truck, leaving the family without their vehicle after only a month and a half of ownership. Despite buying from a reputable dealership rather than private sellers, Pathak had no indication of any issues.

Insurance and Regulatory Hurdles

Pathak filed a complaint with the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC). Investigators determined the dealership was unaware the truck was stolen and bore no fault. Insurance providers declined coverage, stating the theft did not occur while the vehicle was in Pathak’s possession. The truck heads to auction next week, and while legal action remains an option, Pathak says he cannot afford it. “It’s like daytime robbery to me, nobody is taking accountability,” he stated.

VIN Tampering Poses Major Risk

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) auto theft unit highlights this as a widespread issue, affecting even vehicles from dealerships. Criminals expertly tamper with VINs, creating convincing labels that evade standard checks. “For dealerships it is often difficult to detect, because individuals who are re-VINing vehicles in the province know their craft well. They can make their labels appear legitimate,” said Sgt. Brandon Crozier of ALERT Auto Crimes.

Crozier notes the severe impact on families left financially responsible with no vehicle. He emphasizes disputes between buyers and dealerships often hinge on proof of due diligence. Buyers expect safe, non-salvage, non-stolen vehicles from licensed sellers. To protect themselves, Crozier advises researching dealership practices upfront: “Before going to a dealership, get to know the dealership. I would ask them about their best practices of what they do to ensure vehicles are safe and legitimate to be on a roadway.”

Government Vows Stronger Oversight

Alberta Services Minister Dale Nally called the incident “completely unacceptable.” “When an Albertan buys a vehicle from a licensed dealership, it should always be able to be legally owned. Licensed dealerships have a responsibility to ensure the vehicles they sell meet the requirements to be legally registered,” Nally stated. The government plans to meet with AMVIC to investigate the lapse and explore enhanced oversight measures.

Charges Laid in Related Fraud Case

The RCMP has charged 49-year-old Tanya Michelle Murray of St. Paul with fraud, forgery, and uttering a forged document in connection with the truck. She appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was released, with her next court date in August 2026.

Although overall auto theft numbers are declining, RCMP reports this crime type remains a concern. Officials urge buyers to perform license checks, review Carfax and Carproof reports, and confirm dealership reputations to spot potential red flags.
