Meta has eliminated more than 159 million scam advertisements and shut down 10.9 million accounts linked to scamming operations on Facebook and Instagram. The company simultaneously rolls out new anti-scam tools on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp to counter the three most frequent scam tactics targeting users.

Scams Pose Major Threat Across Platforms

Scam activities remain a persistent issue on Meta’s networks. Last year, the platform removed over 159 million fraudulent ads and deactivated 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram dedicated to scams by criminal networks.

AI Tools Enhance Scam Detection

Meta deploys advanced AI systems to identify scams more efficiently. These technologies process multiple signals—including text, images, and contextual elements—to detect subtle deception tactics beyond the reach of conventional methods. Primary targets include:

  • Impersonation of celebrities, public figures, and brands
  • Links directing to fake websites that imitate legitimate sites

New Proactive User Alerts

Meta introduces alerts to flag activities showing potential scam indicators, even if not fully confirmed as fraudulent.

Facebook Friend Requests

Users now see warnings for friend requests from accounts with few mutual connections, those seemingly located in distant countries, or profiles created recently. These measures address cloned accounts and random solicitations.

WhatsApp Device Linking

When linking an account to a new device, WhatsApp displays the device’s country of origin and warns that the action provides full access to messages while enabling potential impersonation.

Facebook Messenger Scam Checks

Messenger identifies signs of prevalent scams, such as bogus job offers. It notifies users of suspicious content and offers an option to trigger an AI-driven scam analysis.
