Canada’s passport maintains its seventh position in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, tying with Australia, Czechia, Latvia, New Zealand, Slovakia, and Slovenia. This ranking grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 182 destinations worldwide.

The Henley Passport Index compiles exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to rank 199 passports across 227 destinations. Updated monthly, it provides a key benchmark for global travel mobility.

Ranking Boost and Trends

Recent gains have elevated Canada’s visa-free access from 181 countries in January to 182, driven by new agreements including with China. The country ranked ninth in 2016 before stabilizing around seventh and eighth in subsequent years.

Top Global Passports

Singapore dominates the 2026 index with access to 192 countries. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates share second place, followed by Sweden in third.

The U.S. passport slips to tenth, offering entry to 179 destinations—a drop from fourth in 2016.

Visa Requirements for Canadians

Canadians require a visa or e-visa for these nations: Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Benin, Bhutan, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, India, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Myanmar, Nauru, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Togo, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Yemen.

Passport fees in Canada rise on March 31, so applicants may benefit from submitting renewals promptly.
