Voice Issues Prompt Medical Action

Smith, a staple in Fox Sports commentary for nearly three decades, noticed persistent voice problems during the final two to three months of the 2025 season. Despite the demands of the job—screaming and projecting on live TV—he sensed something more serious.

“I was just sort of battling through the end of the season last year – the last two or three months,” Smith stated. “Doing what we do, we’re screaming and carrying on on TV quite a lot. It’s sort of just a hazard of the job, and we all deal with voices that aren’t at their best all the time.”

“But I just sort of thought, ‘This is not quite right, there’s something else doing.’ So I booked myself in to see a specialist the week after the grand final,” he added.

Scans confirmed laryngeal carcinoma, or pre-cancerous abnormal tissue in his voice box. Smith underwent three laser surgeries and remained silent for recovery, communicating with his wife via clipboard.

Optimism for Return to Commentary Box

Despite the setback, Smith remains positive about resuming his role. “We all end at some stage as far as our careers are concerned, but I want to go out on my terms,” he said.

Recently, he participated in the Super Swim challenge to support the Starlight Foundation, showcasing his commitment beyond the mic. Smith has also been photographed with figures like NSW Origin coach Laurie Daley.

Background and Fan Support

Since joining Fox Sports in 1995, Smith has earned respect as one of Australia’s most versatile callers, covering NRL matches, World Superbike Championships, and Presidents Cup golf.

Fans rallied online after the news emerged. “Take care, Warren. Look forward to seeing you back in the comms box shortly,” one wrote on X. Another added, “Here’s to a solid recovery – here’s to hearing you back in the box soon. All the best to you and yours Warren.” A third shared, “He is one of my favourites; hoping he makes a healthy recovery and can get back behind the mic soon.”
