Apple Music introduces Transparency Tags, a new metadata system designed to identify AI-generated and AI-assisted music. This initiative targets both audio and visual elements, placing the onus on record labels and distributors to disclose AI involvement before content submission.

Key Features of Transparency Tags

The system covers four main areas. The ‘Track’ tag indicates if AI contributes significantly to the audio recording at the track level. The ‘Composition’ tag flags substantial AI use in music composition or lyrics generation.

Visual elements receive dedicated attention too. The ‘Artwork’ tag marks AI-created static or motion images for album or single covers. Similarly, the ‘Music Video’ tag applies to visual components in albums and standalone videos.

Implementation and Industry Role

Record labels and distributors can opt to apply these tags during content submission to promote transparency in AI usage. Apple Music’s announcement stresses: “Proper tagging of content is the first step in giving the music industry the data and tools needed to develop thoughtful policies around AI.” It adds, “We believe labels and distributors must take an active role in reporting when the content they deliver is created using AI.”

No specific rollout date has been announced, though the system starts as optional.

Challenges and Future Outlook

This opt-in approach raises concerns about incomplete transparency, as labels may avoid tags to prevent potential impacts on streaming numbers. Listeners might skip tracks labeled as AI-involved, even if only partially so.

Reports suggest these tags could become mandatory for content delivery in the future, ensuring broader compliance.

Competitor Landscape

Apple Music moves ahead of Spotify, which has tightened impersonation rules but lacks a clear AI labeling system. Deezer offers an AI detection tool shared with rivals, while Bandcamp prohibits AI-generated music entirely.
