Indonesian badminton star Jonatan Christie, boasting two million Instagram followers, targets a repeat victory at the YONEX All England Open. The 28-year-old clinched the men’s singles title two years ago as an unseeded player, navigating a challenging draw. Now the fourth seed, he opens against Jia Heng Jason Teh on Wednesday.
Ambition for Repeat Success
Christie expresses confidence in defending his crown. “I hope I can repeat two years ago when I became the champion, so I hope to be the champion again here,” he states. He acknowledges the field’s progress: “All players have improved a lot, so it is not easy to become champion again here.”
To fuel his drive, Christie draws motivation from family. “I need more energy, I need more motivation to get ready every time I play. Every day, when I am travelling, every time I will video call with them, because I miss looking at my son, to look at his smile, to look at my wife’s smile.”

“It is a very memorable moment for me because we didn’t know if we could meet in the final,” Christie reflects. “We made history after 30 years having an all-Indonesian final again, maybe it was Hariyanto Arbi who was the last one.” He highlights the grueling early matches: “I just remember my opponent from the first round was very tough. They were the toughest opponents I have ever played in any tournament.”
Challenging Path Ahead
The top half of the men’s singles draw has eased with the early exits of top seed Shi Yu Qi and eighth seed Alex Lanier. Christie’s bracket remains formidable, featuring potential quarter-final clashes against World Tour Finals winner Christo Popov and former world champion Loh Kean Yew.
Christie prioritizes self-focus ahead of his opener on 12BET Court. “My preparation is like usual, I just want to focus on my body, on my skills and just be more clear to enjoy the game and enjoy the match,” he says. “I just want to focus on my side. I know Jason has some really good plays, but for me, I just need to focus on my side.”
