The overall fertility price is a small quantity with huge penalties.

It measures what number of infants, on common, every girl can have over her lifetime. And for a inhabitants to stay secure – flat, no progress, no decline – ladies, on common, should have 2.1 children.

Within the U.S., that quantity is 1.6, and dropping. It is driving a brand new political debate about what – if something – may be achieved about it.

The factor is, beneath that demographic information level are thousands and thousands of households making intimate choices about children. NPR’s Sarah McCammon and Brian Mann dug into the politics and private tales behind America’s shrinking birthrate.
