The opening round of the Genesis Invitational was disrupted several times on Thursday as steady rain flooded Riviera Country Club, forcing officials to stop play more than once. The first suspension came at 10:13 a.m. PT, when the horn sounded and players were taken off the course because water had collected on several greens.
At that time, Akshay Bhatia led at 3 under through six holes. Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Ryan Gerard were close behind at 2 under after three holes, while nearly half of the 72-player field had not yet started their rounds.
Thanks for the submission!
Play resumed shortly after 1 p.m. PT once conditions improved, but the earlier delay had already slowed the schedule. Course staff worked constantly to remove standing water using squeegees to make the greens playable again.
Play was stopped again later in the day as the weather remained poor and daylight began to fade. The round was eventually halted for darkness at 5:41 p.m. PT leaving 30 players still on the course without finishing.
The heavy rain left the greens soaked throughout the day. Tour rules official Orlando Pope said the pause was needed to protect the course rather than because of safety concerns.
“It’s not a dangerous situation, but it is just too much water on the greens. We’re losing greens left and right,” Pope said.
Scottie Scheffler was among those near the bottom of the leaderboard when play stopped with the $20 million Signature Event purse still far from being a factor after the disrupted start. Round 3 of the Genesis Invitational however has taken place under clear and steady conditions.
The Genesis Invitational Round 1 resumed Friday at 7 a.m. PT so the remaining players could finish. The second round of ththen began at 7:40 a.m. PT about 25 minutes later than originally planned, as officials worked to get the tournament back on schedule.
